Your top 5 most memorable Bury games ever. Not necessarily wins. With reasons.
1. The West Brom league cup match. Mist rolling over Gigg, an icy surface. A top 1st division side, in their scary green and yellow kit, somehow beaten by the "plucky " Shakers.Think I swung from the B stand rafters. 2. The 1-1 draw vs City with Sky actually having discovered Gigg Lane. Finally felt like we had arrived . Crackling atmosphere. Before things started to go sour. They've been souring ever since. 3. The 5-3 defeat at Hereford in the Dobson promotion year. Involved a cross Wales journey.Arrived in Herefordshire with fog drifting through the orchards. End to end stuff, and then some. 2 wingers, 2 strikers.....repeat playable football. 4. The Boxing Day 3-2 victory at Burnden Park. This was when these local derbies started to reach comedy levels, the tradition of the happy day out to the supermarket. David Lee's first goal? 5. Watford promotion clincher....for obvious reasons.

We beat you 2-0 or 2-1 (sorry!)season before last.
Bobby Zamora lobbed the keeper with the outside of his boot from a long way out. Magnificent goal. How we could do with him now!! Then I got lost on the way back to our car. __________________

I've got 5 memorable defeats so here goes:
1. Bury v Wimbledon 1983. I'll never forget that ecstatic feeling of celebrating promotion for the first time (or my blue face when the rain washed the dye out). It's just a pity we weren't actually going up (Thanks Mr Iley!). 2. Bury v Wrexham 1985. Promotion celebrations (despite losing the match) were for real this time. 3. Bournemouth v Bury 2003. Play offs. Great support from the Bury fans who'd made the journey. We actually sang and got behind the team even when they were 3-0 down. The mutual appreciation between players and fans at the end and the "We''ll support you ever more attitude" from us nearly brought a tear to my eye. 4. Bury v S****horpe 2003. My stag weekend and first home game of this season. Great weekend in Manchester. Shame about the footie in Bury. 5. Bury v Plymouth 1995 (the 5-0 defeat). Back home on holiday while living in Italy and managed to see Mike Walsh's last game in charge before Sir Stan took over. I'll never forget the group of lads sat in front me in the South Stand singing anti-Walsh songs. One I remember was to the tune of Dad's Army, "Mickey Walsh went off to town to buy a load of sh*te".....You had to be there though to appreciate the humour! ops: |

1 - Bury 3 Middlesbrough 2 - 1975/76 FA Cup 3rd Round Replay. The last minute goal, I think it was Jimmy McIlwraith. The atmosphere in the ground was amazing and something that will stay with me for a long time
2 - Play Off Final. Me and the lad (He was four then) travelled from Plymouth (Left at 3 in the morning) to Bury so we could get the coach down to Wembley. He insisted that he had his face painted by the girls at Gigg Lane on the understanding that I did it as well. Ten minutes before we are due to leave he starts throwing up all over the place. I dumped him at the mother in laws and got on the bus. We stopped at a service station on the way down, I think it may have been Watford Gap. The place was a sea of Bury fans, they were everywhere. The immense feeling of pride when Mike Walsh led the team out onto the pitch and the pain on the bus home - still with my face painted. 3 - Bury 6 Workington 0 - FA Cup 1st round 1976 - got ten bells kicked out of me after the game by four Workington lads 4 - Bury 2 Sunderland 5 - atmosphere again and the applause we received from the Mackems 5 - Watford 0 Bury 0 - Dean Kiely's penalty save and my mate from Plymouth (Arsenal Fan) saying that he wanted to have his babies. I could go on with these, there are loads The west brom league cup win, Ian Robins goal and the 22,000+ crowd at Gigg Lane, plus the 27,000 at the next game against Cloughie and Notts Forrest Bury 6 Carlisle 0 - All scored in the first half - but who was the keeper for Carlisle - KELHAM O'HANLON - Something I remind him of nearly every day The day Warnock left and the smile I wore for the next week Listening to the crowd from the Car Park against Millwall and the Division Two Championship - Rocket Ronnie giving me half a tin after in the social club Terry Robinson sitting in his office when the yanks were receiving anthrax powder in the post. He was opening his mail with gloves and a gas mask on - funniest thing I've ever seen - I actually ****ed myself upon seeing that... |

Top five for me:-
City 0 Bury 1. Valentine's day 1998. A month before my wedding. Me in the away end. City fanatic wife (to be) behind the opposite goal. Playing one of our biggest rivals on their own patch and beating 'em. You can't whack it. Bury 1 Wimbledon 3. Gutted was not the word. Shouldn't have to feel like that at 15 years old. Collected a bollocking from Plod at the end and deservedly so. I won't elaborate. ops: Bury 2 Millwall 0. Virtually in tears at the sight of that trophy being lifted by Pugh and Lucketti. A few weeks short of my 30th birthday!! ops: Blackpool 0 Bury 5. What a result when you've planned a night out around it as well. Oh I did like to be beside the seaside!!! Bury 3 Middlesbrough 2. Greatest cup night at Gigg Lane ever that I can remember. Just shades Bury -v- WBA because of the comeback from two down. Many, many others that I could have mentioned as well. Top thread.

Off the top of my head!
1. Crewe Alex 1 Bury 2 FA Cup 2nd RoundI was young at the time and i hadnt really seen the team i had really begun to love play a major side. We came from behind against a decent Crewe side a division above us and Tony Rigby scored in the final minute for us and i realised we had a chance of getting Man Utd in the next round, a side who everybody at my school supported. We had it all going against us during the game too, a refereeing display i still recall as being the worst ive seen by a younger Jeff Winter! We got Tranmere Rovers instead. 2. Bolton Wanderers 0 Bury 1 Worthington Cup 2nd RoundAn obvious one of recent times but the side they put out could still have wiped the floor with us but every single Bury player without exception played to their highest ability and you couldnt tell who the Premier League side was. The build up to the game for weeks on Y3K was brilliant and i started a thread which got to about 95 posts and it was still funny at the end. Like many Bury fans, i had a sneaky sneaky sneaky suspicion that we were going to snatch something but i didnt expect us to do it by dominating most of the game! I was so nervous on the day of the match, Bolton Wanderers runs all down my mums side and didnt want their stick and after a comfortable first half Mr Woodthorpe slid in to get a touch and i just went crazy! I was on the edge of my seat too when Chris Billy turned a defender and blasted over but i was shouting 1-0 to the bucket Shakers on the way out as it began to rain! We waited, like many Bury fans, for most of the car park traffic to go which meant we could chat to complete strangers and look at the lights of the stadium we just won at. This one and the Millwall title win also makes me a little sad....how long will it be before we experience something like that again? 3. Watford 0 Bury 0 Division TwoI think everybody wanted to call their son Dean. I was annoyed with Gordon Armstrong in which was generally a boring game! Stan did the usual first alf substitution of bringing Nicky Reid off for David Johnson who went on to play really well. The celebrations at the end in the rain and actually hearing a Bury manager chatting on five live. Stan actually sounded happy! 4. Bury 2 Millwall 0 Division TwoMemorable mainly for the atmosphere and everybody being on a high! The game wasnt the best, the goals were scrappy but it meant we finished the season undefeated at home and as champions of Division Two! What a couple of weeks! 5. Bury 3 Cardiff City 0 Division Three Talk about being nervous! Would i finally see my team get promotion. S****horpe and Darlingtons match was delayed by 15 mins due to a second half pitch invasion after one of Darlos three goals in the 3-3 draw. We waited and waited for it to finish as Scunny gave away i think a 3-1 lead and even GMR had a commentator there! All stood on the pitch, people looking around at each other and then everybody jumping and hugging at the same time as numerous people shouted that the game at Glanford Park had ended! It looks great on video too! Other faves, the 2-0 win at Brentford who were third when we were top. Nick Daws' goal, which failed to get on the season review tape, was one of the best ive ever seen us score. Bolton Wanderers 1 Bury 3 My first away match saw us win courtesy of a John McGinlay hat-trick. I narrowly avoided a brick at my little head aimed by a Bolton fan at the Bury coach. Exeter City 1 Bury 1 All the way down there to see a rubbish game and not win promotion this week! My dad had food poisoning all the way home too! Darlington 4 Bury 0 Same reason but Mark Carter, shock horror, MISSED a penalty! Man City 0 Bury 1 More memorable for the City fan ripping up his ticket and then being punished by having it sent back to him in the post! Preston NE 0 Bury 1 Play off Semis FINALLY a play-off win! A cracking goal and the second leg fits in this list too for the perfect finale and THAT goal! Mansfield 1 Bury 5 Phil Stant hitting four and being applauded and supported by the Stags fans. On the video of the match, you can hear them cheering him to score as he ran up the field for his fourth! Crewe Alex 2 Bury 4 Didnt play well in this game, i dont know how we scored 4! Mark Carter on tv afterwards explaining how he got a speeding ticket! Have you gone to sleep?!!!!! |

1) Bury 3 Cardiff 0 The year we went up. Those oh so agonising minutes on the pitch, while the Darlo/Scunny game ran on and on for what seemed like years. WHen I play the video of the game, where the camera pans over to the Cardiff fans and then zooms back as the result comes in still sends a tingle down my spine.
2) Bury 2 Millwall 0 Like something out of fantasy land. We won a trophy. We won a league. What a couple of years that was. Gigg Lane packed to the rafters. When Ronnie's header went in it was like heaven but Lenny's scrambled goal was the start of ecstasy. 3) Watford 0 Bury 0 Strange choice this, because I was several thousand miles away in California at my cousin's wedding. I remember spending all day thinking about what was happening and looking at my watch thinking "It's half time now, wonder what the score is". How I lasted until the next day when I found out the result I will never know. 4) Bury 1 QPR 0 Beating the then first division league toppers with that Liam Robinson goal past a certain Mr D Seaman was a great night. Even the next round at OT couldn't top it. 5) Doncaster 1 Bury 3 Lee Bracey saving a penalty at Belle Vue and then turning round to grin at the Bury fans behind the goal. That was when we took 34 points out of 36 from Doncaster over 6 seasons. Ahhh, the memories.

1. Play off final v Chesterfield. Players walking out onto the pitch - fantastic, the best ever. Terrible match and result - talk about high and lows in the space of 90 minutes
2. As mentioned earlier, Wimbledon home in the 80's GOING UP, GOING UP, GOING UP. Oh hang on a minute no were not. The highs and lows in the space of a few minutes 3. FA Cup 4th Round in 80's v's John Barnes Watford at Vicarage Road. A fantastic performance with Lee Dixon constantly thundering down the wing from Full Back, completely out played them for most the match. A John Bramall bullet header sent the few hundred Bury fans bananas!! The Bury fans that night were fantastic - sung the whole match without any breaks 4. Watford again - Deano's penalty save - nuff said 5. 80's midweek match, bowling green pitch, four wingers, attacking, top quality football - Bury 6 Bristol City 3 i think the score ended although I may have added a few goals on. oooh i've got goose pimples, time for a lie down! |

Watford 1-1 Bury FA Cup 4th Round 1985?
Rearranged match for a monday night. Travelled down on the coaches and parked in the allotments behind the away end. Stood on the terracing and sung my heart out all through the match with several hundred Bury fans. John Barnes scored early but we kept singing and with 5 mins left John Bramhall powered in a header in our end. Cue wild celebrations. Shame we lost the replay 3-0 at home. Charlton 0-1 Bury (at West Ham) League Cup early 90's. Strange seeing Upton Park with only 2,000 fans. We had about 150 there. Remember arriving 2 hours before kick off and wandering around the local streets - very scary. Hulmey scored from a Knill flick on from a Dawsey throw. Jumped over a barrier to celebrate and promptly dislocated finger. Peterborough 1-4 Bury Late 80's Peterborough unbeaten at home, we went 4-0 up. Amazing stuff - remember Leighton James scoring from about 30 yards. Shame we only had about 80 of us there. Northampton 0-0 Bury - Early 80's Monday night match. Got stuck in traffic on coach. Got to half an hour before kick off, I thought we might just make it. Coach driver then states he has to take his mandatory break in the services !!! Got there half way through 1st half - got absolutley soaked in a gale force wind - matched was crap finished 0-0 and got beaten up by some cobblers afterwards. Fantastic night out. Luton 0-0 Bury - Tuesday match before the famous Deano Watford penalty save. Met a mate in Luton mid afternoon, visited a few bars, got to the game, thought it strange having to go under someone's bedroom to get to the away seating. Great atmosphere, we defended brilliantly and the players celebrated with us at the end knowing we just needed one further point to gain promotion. Dropped my mate off at Luton train station, made the mistake of going on to the platform. Was spotted by the local Luton yobs and ran for my life. Luckily some cops were right outside the station. Great drive home with the scarves out the window. Finally, Watford 0-0 Bury .....of course, what else. 2,000 Bury fans celebrating. Buying the T shirts under the stand at the final whistle. A Watford fan going along the line of Bury cars queueing to get out and shaking our hands. Fantastic feeling driving home knowing we were in Division One. |

Just reading the lists brings back the memories. Winning at City and the Reebok, the celebrations after Millwall and Cardiff, I was in tears after both. I'd add a couple of others too.
Bury 2 Nottm Forest 1 The day Canon Smith died, full house at Gigg on a tuesday night, yet you could hear a pin drop for the minutes silence. Then the roar of the crowd as the ref blew his whistle. Swanny and Johnno made it a night to remember, and signalled to everyone Bury had arrived in division 1. Unfortunately we soon lost at home to bottom club Portsmouth and then sold Johnno to Ipswich, typical Bury. Bury 4 Burnley 2 Boxing Day, and a first half performance that was beyond belief, fantastic football, 4-0 up. It was the last game my father-in-law ever saw, and despite struggling with his speech after a stroke, you could see the wonderment in his eyes at the Shakers performance. Oh happy days. |

I could never count the 2-1 as a favourite game because of who our manager was at the time. There's no way that any game under his "leadership" could be regarded as one of the best. Mine, in no particular order: Bury 3 Cardiff 0 Watford 0 Bury 0 S****horpe 1 Bury 2 (April 1996) Brentford 0 Bury 2 Bury 7 (Seven) Lincoln 1 But there are lots, lots more to consider.

Every game at Burnden Park - behind the goal, the anticipation after losing sight of play behind the supermarket. More often than not, coming away with a win, singing upstair on the 523 all the way to the Welly
Attending my very first game aged around 15 - Tuesday night, year unknown but pretty sure it was Colchester 1-1 against City at Gigg. For years I'd seen City toy with us in pre-season friendlies, letting us get a game in the first half then stuffing the tripes out of us when they turned it on. To finally play them on equal terms and get a draw was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. (Couldn't get to the away game) Fulham last season - the excitement of a seeing my 8 year old son's face when I told him where we were going, 10 minutes before we set off. That feeling of Dad n son adventure, a great atmosphere in the ground and even better outside as Bury fans sang their way up the road. The choke in in my throat at 2am when we got home and as he got out of the car my son said "thanks for a great night, it was the best treat ever" 1985 and promotion - My only taste of success at Gigg given I didn't see much of the Ternent era. Tears in my eyes as we clambered off the pitch and onto the paddock to be showered in champagne __________________

The first five that sprang to mind..
Cardiff (home) 1996 3-0 The first time i had ever seen us get promotion and definately the most nerve-wracking and longest four minutes of my life after the final whistle. Watford (away) 1997 0-0 The way the singing and celebrating suddenly stopped after the penalty was given and i thought i was going to be physically sick as we looked like throwing it all away. The elation and relief after Deano's penalty save was amazing. Milwall (home) 1997 2-0 Never seen or heard so many Bury fans singing at a home game. 'We are the champions.....' Bolton (away) 1988 4-2 One of my first away games and i could hardly see as it was packed and everyone was about 2 foot taller than me. Bury fans chanting 'thank you very much for Steve Elliot' at the wanderers, to the tune of the old 'Roses' chocolate advert. I also joined in with 'W*nky wanderers chant without realising what w*nk actually meant. My dad either didn't hear me, or didn't mind as it was at the expense of Bolton. At the time i wondered why everyone hated B*lton so much as they had a crap ground, a built in supermarket eyesore, a crap team and the worst left back ever - Barry Cowdrill. I soon grew to hate them. Port Vale (away) 1989 3-1 Comfortably or uncomfortably the wettest i've ever been at a Bury match. Me and my brother got a ticking off from a policeman for apparently celebrating too near the home fans as we ran towards Liam Robinson who had scored the opening goal. I was only 9!! The television camera had also caught me and i was on Elton Welsbys Kick-off the following week, and its also on that seasons goal video. Also remember a character chanting with some sort of toy parrot on his shoulder and everyone singing as we walked out of the ground p*ss wet through. |

Only 17 so not experienced too many highs.
Bolton away last year. Not just the result but the performance of totally playing them of the park Bournemouth in the play offs! Got my GCSE exam mobved so i could go "on holiday" took the drum down. Terrific atmosphere! Kielys penny save at Watford. One of my first away games I think it was against Torquay where we got promoted or play offs and every one ran on the pitch. My first game watching the mighty whites (Bury). I'll have to think about the fifth one as only been a devout shaker for last couple of years!!!
