Best is yet to come insists a happy acting manager - Bury Times - Friday, 18 September 1995:
EVEN a shock transfer request from lan Hughes and rumours that Tony Rigby is also about to hammer on his door have not knocked Shakers' acting manager Stan Ternent out of his stride Two wins and a draw from three games since he took over the reins have left Tement and the rest of the Bury camp in buoyant mood and looking forward to capturing their first home league win of the season against Cambridge tomorrow. "lan came to me on Monday with his request for a move and I fully understand his frustration," admitted Ternent. "He has not been able to command a regular place in the team and we will do all we can to help him in his wishes. However, while he is still here he remains very much part of my plans and the squad." Hughes. the Wales under 21 captain has always seen his best position as centre half hut the form of Chris Lucketti and latterly Trevor Matthew son has left him on the Gigg Lane sidelines. "I haven't fallen out with anyone and if I am picked I will continue to give everything 1 have for the club but I feel its time to move on," said Hughes, a product of the Bury youth system. "It is not a decision I came to overnight and it wasn't an easy one to make but I feel a move will benefit me at this stage." The Shakers will want in the region of £100,000 for the 21 -year-old who has attracted interest from Manchester City and Bristol City in previous seasons. Rigby, meanwhile, is known to be upset at his lack of first team opportunity and was expected to be discussing his future with Tement before the weekend. A transfer request is, I understand, more than likely. Tement must wait for a late test of groin strain victim Shaun Reid before naming his side to face Cambridge. He must also make up his mind between fit again Gary Kelly and Lee Bracey for the goalkeeper's shirt. "The team spirit here is great and considering what has happened over the past season we are pleased with four points from six away from home and progress in the Coca-Cola Cup." he said. "We were disappointed not to get all three points at Lincoln on Tuesday ( see Sport 4) but we are now looking forward to putting on a show for our own fans. "Our application and commitment have been first class and while we still haven't reached our best we are making progress. "We are giving away too many goals but we continue to create numerous chances and the important thing is that we are sticking together and going forward as a team."
