Stan's the man but other in frame - Bury Times, Friday 08 September 1995:
STAN TERNENT is odds-on favourite to succeed Mike Walsh in the Gigg Lane hot seat but a number of other proven managers have already thrown their hats into the ring, The Gigg Lane telephones have not stopped ringing since Mike Walsh's departure on Monday morning. More than 20 bosses have already asked to show what they can do. Although the club would neither confirm or deny approaches from individuals it is believed that John Beck, the former Cambridge and Preston boss: Frank Stapleton, who managed Bradford City, and Phil Neal. the ex-Bolton and Coventry City chief, are amongst those who have made a pitch to the Shakers.  Fans' favourite Sammy Mcllroy is another who could yet enter the fray as is former Man " United striker Stuart Pearson.  Two names from the blue half of Manchester. Sam Ellis and Howard Kendall. have not expressed an interest.   Ternent. though, is the man in possession and will keep the job on a permanent basis if the side keeps on winning. "The powers that be will decide but of course I'd love to be the manager here," said Tement. "A lot of people would love to come to a progressive club like Bury. I'm sure there will be lot of top quality people looking for the job.  "We haven't played  as well this year as we did last season hut 1 am sure if the lads keep working hard they'll turn it around for us. We'll need a little help from the supporters.  "We realise how frustrated they can get but one cheer is worth a million boos."  It is unlikely that   Ternent will make many' changes for tomorrow's trip to Wigan bin John Paskin, Kevin Hulme and Gary Kelly are all added to the squad after successfully coming through a reserve game.   Wigan will be without one of their Spanish trio. Roberto Martinez. who is suspended, as is record signing Chris Lightfoot.  "I'll be looking for the same level of commitment at Wigan as there was against Chesterfield." demanded Ternent.   "The lads had a go on Tuesday night and they've been told that it's up to them to keep their shirts."
