McIlroy is Fans Choice - Manchester Evening News - Wed, 06 Sept 1995:
SAMMY Mcllroy is the fans choice to take over at third division Bury. But the odds-on favourite to succeed Mike Walsh is his assistant Stan Ternent. Gigg Lane supporters last night chanted for the ex-Manchester United Northern Ireland international, who played for the Shakers and is earning rave reviews as boss of non-league Macclesfleld. But caretaker Ternent also has his support, shown when the team bounced back to beat second division Chesterfield in the Coca-Cola Cup first round and won a standing ovation. The fear is that bringing in Mcllroy would mean a break up of the highly-rated back room staff - and a change in style meaning a mass exodus of players. Majority share holder Hugh Eaves, the millionaire who owns 80 per cent of the club said: "Stan will be given a fair crack of the whip. We don't need to advertise and have had 20 applications in during the first 24 hours." Asked whether Mcllroy would be approached. Eaves said: "People are coming to us and we will be looking at the whole situation. I am not ruling anyone Out."
