Walsh Goes? - Manchester Evening News - Monday, 04 September 1995:
Mike Walsh today became the first managerial casualty of the new season - after just six games. The 39 year old Bury manager paid a high price for the 5-0 home hammering by bottom club Plymouth that ended his four and a half year reign. "Mike Walsh has not been sacked nor has he offered to resign," said distraught chairman Terry Robinson. "We just agreed that it is in the best interest's of the club that Mike goes now. He accepts that and he goes with our thanks after doing a great job." "The fans have been getting on his back after recent disappointing results. Saturday's defeat was the one that really turned them against him. It came to the stage where he was under so much pressure that something had to be done to help the club and him through this difficult time." Bury, after 22 clean sheets last season, have been leaking goals at a frightening rate. They have conceded 13 in five league games and have won only once - 4-3 at Hereford. Manchester born Walsh started his playing career as an outstanding central defender with Bolton before moving on to Everton, Norwich, Burnley, Manchester City, Blackpool and Bury. He succeeded Sam Ellis as manager in December 1990, and took the Shakers close to promotion last season. The dream ended bitterly with a play off defeat by Chesterfield at Wembley. Chesterfield are the visitors tomorrow for the Coca Cola Cup second leg when Walsh's assistant Stan Ternent will be in charge.
