Coach dash ended in agony - Bury Times - Friday, 21 November 1995:
BURY'S victory plans were thrown into chaos on Saturday morning when Trevor Matthewson's dash for the team coach ended in agony.  The in-form defender trapped a nerve in his back which then went into spasm. An urgent call went out to the home of Michael Jackson who was still asleep - no doubt dreaming about his forthcoming outing against Wrexham A at Lower Gigg.  Jackson quickly gathered his kit and met up with his team-mates on the motorway before turning in a superb performance.  "It was a big surprise to get the call but I thoroughly enjoyed being back in the first team," declared Jackson. "I just hope I've done enough to keep my place.  "I lost out when I injured my ankle early in the season and Trevor has done well so I've had to be patient. Stan (Ternent) and Sam (Ellis) have been on at me not to get down about not being in the side and told me to be patient and take my chance when it came. Hopefully I've done that".  Matthewson reckons his back will be better in a couple of days after rest and manipulation and was philosophical about the injury.  "It niggled me a little bit when I woke up but I didn't think anything of it until I ran to get on the coach," he recounted. "When it went it was agony but it was probably a blessing in disguise because it could have happened in the first ten minutes of the match and then we'd have been in trouble."  Tement, who lost Ryan Cross with a hamstring pull on Friday, was forced to play Dean West at full back and was full of praise for his changed side.  "We adapted really well and far from making my job harder, the lads who've come in have done so well that it makes my job easier," he declared.   "We were good value for our win today and we could have had more goals."   "A week is a long time in this game. Last Saturday after losing to Blyth I was almost suicidal but today I'm delighted. That's football.  "We've won three on the trot away from home in the league now we just have to give our fans -who were brilliant again today - something to shout about at home.  "We have a lot of character in our .side and it came out today. Everyone played their part including the substitutes who were brought on as tactical moves to stifle any Cardiff fightback."
