Homesick Shakers star quits Gigg Lane, Mulli-gone - Bolton Evening News - Friday, 17 November 1995:
BURY winger Jimmy Mulligan today left Gigg Lane because he is homesick for Dublin. The quicksilver 21-year-old, whose promising Bury career has been constantly plagued by injury, asked to have his contract terminated. And the Shakers' manager Stan Tement and Terry Robinson agreed to end the player's Gigg Lane nightmare prematurely. Mulligan was hailed a star of the future when he stormed into league football during an exciting loan spell from Stoke City two years ago. But his potential was never allowed to be fulfilled by a horrendous run of injuries which restricted his league starts to just 18. And Mulligan, whose involvement this season has been restricted to three appearances on the bench, yesterday decided enough was enough. Tement explained: "He came to us and laid his cards on the table and the outcome is very amicable. He has had a lot of injuries and is homesick. "He did not like it too much over here and wanted to get back to Dublin and we feel it is in the best interests of both Jimmy and the club that there should be a parting of the ways. You always feel sad when things do not work out but it's the lad's decision and we don't want to stand in his way."
