Accused, Angry Bury point fingers at boss Quinn after exit - Manchester Evening News - Wednesday, 08 November 1995:
BURY today accused Reading boss Jimmy Quinn of stoking up the trouble that spilled over into an after-match scuffle in a bitter Coca-Cola Cup-tie.  Quinn, Reading's joint manager, popped up as a late substitute to head their last-minute winner before a tunnel flare-up.  The joint manager later accused Bury players of causing trouble and asked for police to be drafted into the dressing-room area to protect his team.  Sheffield referee John Kirkby, who called the original game off because of flooding a fortnight ago with Bury leading 2-0, was later escorted across the pitch by police to reach his car later and avoid angry Shakers' fans.  "There was obviously going to be a bit of needle from the first game because of what Phil Stant said but Jimmy Quinn kept it going with his remarks," said Bury chairman Terry Robinson.   Quinn described the behaviour of some Bury players in the tunnel as "scandalous" and added: "I think there was a bit of a scuffle. The Bury players were calling us cheats, which I think is a bit naive.  " I won't let my players get involved in things like that."  Bury manager Stan Ternent replied: "1 think it all stems from the first match, when we didn't feel the game should have been called off.  "Had we been Reading, we just would have been glad to have another crack at it. The Reading players aren't cheats and neither are mine.  "I am very disappointed for the lads. I thought we gave a good account of ourselves and a draw would have been a fair result but unfortunately you don't always get what you deserve in football.  Reading's other scorer, Stuart Lovell, confirmed: "There was a bit of pushing and shoving but no punches.  "One of their players had plenty to say afterwards, but Quinny basically reminded him that was why he's a Third Division players."  And Bury's lan Hughes said: "There was a little bit of argy-bargy at the end.  " Everyone gets a bit heated up and annoyed and things like that are going to happen because players are naturally frustrated."
