I Tried my best - Warnock faces the music at prize night:
It was arguably the hardest job Neil Warnock had undertaken all season - not keeping Bury up, but facing the music at the end of the season awards night.? A loyal crowd, containing the usual tiny percentage of angry hostile support packed into the social club just a day after relegation from Division One. ? The popular Terry Robinson and Chris Lucketti provided the warm up act - and were well received too - before the manager took to the stage to fight off the flak.? As expected for a man who had failed to keep the club up, boos greeted his arrival, although the vast majority of fans heard him out.
"You can tell from the reception I received at Port Vale game what some supporters think about me," he said.? "I thought about bringing the? wife and baby with me and wearing my glasses, but I am not hiding from this.? Obviously I take the stick and that is right.? I would just like to thank those people who have stood by me.? I have done my best and the players have tried their hardest, but that is not enough for some people.? But for another point, which we all know we should have got, I could have been a hero.? It was disappointing to see Crystal Palace lose 6-0. ? I would have expected a team of professional to have done better than that. ? Port Vale came here and gave us a good game but the West Brom match was the cruncher.? We thought that if we took a point there and beat Port Vale we would be okay with 48 points, but it's not to be.? No doubt some of you won't be disappointed if I am not here next season, but I intend to see it through and get us back into Division One.? O know you are all used to success, but so am I.? I am really disappointed we didn't crack it.? We have to make sure that instead of going into freefall that we get the right backing and get back where we have come from.
And there was an attack on the element of support which has waged a hate campaign against certain players, namely Chris Billy and Andy Preece, all season.? He added: "I think some of the lads have received scathing criticism and unfairly so.? Most of the players are very genuine and they try very hard.? We have all made mistakes, myself included.? I don't think any of us know the answers.? All I can ask is that you keep coming and keep supporting the club."? Warnock is determined to play a more attacking style of football next campaign.? He told the Bury Times: "We proved we are good enough to play over the past few weeks of the season when, apart from the Bradford City match, we could have won all of the last 14 games.? We changed the style to 442 and everyone's enjoyed it - the fans and the players - but the lads were reluctant to change the style because they were used to playing a certain way.? You only have to look at our goals scored column over the past two season's. it's been quite horrendous, so I said if I'm going to be here now we'll play attacking football and enjoy ourselves."
