Profile of this season's movers and Shakers - WARNOCK'S REVOLUTION
|
This season must surely rate as Bury's busiest ever in the transfer market. The arrival of new manager Neil Warnock signalled sweeping changes to the playing staff at Gigg Lane, so much so that the Shakers squad which finished the 1998/99 campaign was unrecognisable from 12 months earlier. Throughout the course of the season, the Yorkshire boss made an incredible 20 signings - many of which have played for him previously - whilst releasing 13, including two big names.
Crippling financial restraints, which continue to see the club living from hand to mouth, forced the sale of central defender Paul Butler to Sunderland before the season had even kicked off. His £1m move to Wearside provided the same vital cash injection as David Johnson's move to Ipswich Town in November 1997. Indeed, only the massive cash windfall from the Manchester United Worthington Cup tie prevented the release of either Chris Lucketti or Dean Kiely too. Butler admitted being sad to leave, but went onto make his mark in the Sunderland side, ending a dream season with promotion to the premiership - coincidentally secured at Gigg Lane in April.
The shock sale of the year had to be that of midfield marvel Lennie Johnrose. After being targeted by ex-boss Stan Ternent to join his struggling Burnley side, Johnrose upped sticks in February in a deal worth £220,000. Within hours of his move to Turf Moor, Bury had snapped up a ready made replacement in Swindon hard man Darren Bullock for £200,000. "Bulldog" made his debut in the home clash with Norwich on February 20, but lasted only 10 minutes before a harsh red card put the mockers on his big day. Hopes had been high of a result against the Canaries as two other "Big Name" signings were making their debuts too. Premiership stars Paul Hall and Carl Serrant agreed to team up with their former boss Warnock on a month's loan from Coventry and Newcastle respectively. Serrant's services were eventually retained until the end of the season but Hall was recalled by Coventry manager Gordon Strachan.
The search began for another experienced loan star to help Bury's relegation dog fight and in came Leeds United striker Derek Lilley. The former Scottish Under 21 international, who scored in the memorable first away win of the season at Oxford in April, moved to Gigg Lane until the end of the season. Last year's strike partners Rob Matthews and Tony Ellis were also released. although both were soon re-united at Stockport County. Midfield general Mark Patterson was another to part company with Bury, packing his bags for Southend United after continual run-ins with the Shaker's management. With little or no cash to play with, Warnock's nose for bargain buys was put to its biggest test yet. The season saw the arrival of eight players on free transfers, the majority courtesy of the Bosman Ruling, with the biggest success coming in the shape of unknown Frenchman Laurent D'Jaffo. The giant striker, not always a favourite on the terraces, will be disappointed with his return but was the most "Prolific" of the seven forwards signed by Warnock in 98/99.
Late arrival Paul Barnes was a snip at £40,000, with Huddersfield originally valuing him at more than £200,000, whilst Adrian Littlejohn (£75,000), Paul Williams (£40,000), Patrick Kenny (£10,000) and Ryan Souter (£6,000) were the only other players requiring transfer fees. Shock signing of the year had to be that of pocket dynamo Lutel James from Hyde United. The diminutive striker stepped up from the Unibond League to make a dream and impressive debut at the theatre of dreams against Manchester United, although failed to command a regular starting berth in his first season.
Another transfer out, that shocked the loyal Bury Fans, but was not unexpected, was the sale of Dean Kiely in Mid May to Charlton Athletic for a paltry fee of only £1,000,000. The search begins for a new goalkeeper.
