The day started off incredibly badly for the Shakers supporters side who arrived at Giggs Centre of Excellence changing rooms at quarter past nine, as we found out that the changing rooms we had been promised were to be used for the proper Shakers youths in a game against an Irish team.
Much, much cajoling later, John managed to get permission and a key to use the changing rooms which were at Goshen, so the team set off followed by the Macclesfield fans.
But the troubles did not end there! Once the motorcade reached Goshen and the teams had changed into their kits, it was time to set up the nets. One problem at first we couldnt find goal posts that were big enough, and then when we did, it seemed that they could not be put up so after much deliberation, it was decided to go onto the other pitch where nets were already set up.
Anyway, there was a football match to be played, and it did get going after its delayed kick-off, with new member Salt and Shaker (Kelsey) in net, John and Craig in the centre of defence with Hortash and Dave on either side of them. In the middle were Alan, Paul, Tom and Jimmy, and up front were Gifted and the fans teams leading scorer (no matter what Jimmy might say) me, whilst Shaker Stu started from the bench.
On a sloping pitch with the ground soggy, the Shakers started off quite well, managing to play some good football and make some good breaks through the Macclesfield back line, however, it was the Silkmen who were to take the lead about a third of the way through the first half. Soon after, the Bury fans made a quick break away, which resulted in Jimmy firing a hard and low cross across the face of goal, and I was inches away from slotting it in. Well, a bit further than inches
Stu was then brought on for me, and the Shakers play returned to its usual attacking style. Jimmy swung in a corner which was met by powerful precision from Craig his bullet header smashing the back of the net leaving the keeper floundering.
More opportunities followed for the Shakers with the Macclesfield goalkeeper saving well after a Hortash shot, but the next goal would cause heartbreak for the Whites as Macclesfield equalised, as debutant Salt and Shaker explained, I felt gutted for gifting them the first goal but after bono had told me to keep my head up I started to settle down the second half was a challenge as they were going downhill, I feel ashamed I let in a further four but that comes down to the knock I got on my knee just before their 2nd goal.
Half-time was welcomed for the Shakers as a chance to regroup, with ShakerMatt going off to be replaced by me. We were told to shoot high to try and beat the keeper, because he had already made some good shots saved low by him.
However, it was Macclesfield, now attacking downhill, who took the initiative by scoring not once, not twice, but thrice. The Bury heads were well and truly down and Macclesfield were on a high. I cant remember their goals in a lot of detail, because I think I have some kind of mental block, but needless to say they took their tally up to five to Burys one. They also hit the crossbar/post a few times as well.
However, in the last few minutes, the Shakers rallied round, playing three strikers, and another goal did come. After tricky footwork by Alan on the left, he managed to get the ball out onto the edge of the area for Paul to strike low and hard into the bottom of the net, beating the keeper.
And that was pretty much the end of the footballing action, although there was yet another bout of handbags involving Jimmy and the Macclesfield captain, who had to take himself off after the referee intervened.
Anyway, the Shakers are still searching for their first victory at eleven-a-side, but the game was enjoyed by all. We returned to the social club afterwards in the fans team corner and details were arranged for our participation in a national competition in Leeds in mid July.
Anyway, thats it for this seasons match reports from Zero-X. Look forward to the next exciting instalment coming next season to a message board near you!
