The next stage in the development of our Bury FC internet archive is to produce a website Hall of Fame.
Each month we will be selecting either two managers or players and we will be asking you to decide who it is that gets into our on-line Hall of Fame.
Once inducted then wherever possible we will be trying to contact the player, or manager involved, interview them for the website, and present them with a certificate on matchdays (another job for Peter I suspect).
This will be a long-term project and we hope it will be one that you will all get involved in.
The person who loses out in the vote will not be eligible for re-election within the same season.
Spike v Madden, Kiely v Kelly, Ternent v Stokoe?
The options are limitless but who do you think we should pit against each other?
Which players, or managers, do you think should be elected? Remember we need one player for every position so just picking a defender is not enough as we want a right back, left back, and two central defenders.
The team will have 4-4-2 formation and we will be building from the back so the first position to be filled in August will be that of goalkeeper.
Voting will take place on-line via the website.
Over to you
Will there be more than one vote per position? What I mean by that is...well, let me give an example.
For the goalkeepers position, there will be a fair few suggestions ie. Deano, Gary Kelly, Nev Southall, David Felgate (JOKE!!!!!!) etc.
Will there be a vote to select the 2 players that go head-to-head and then a further vote to pick the winner?
Oooo, it's just like Big Brother.
I think it has to be Deano really - he played with us at the highest level.
Think the vote should be between him and David Brown/Gary Kelly. Can't remember any further back than that, so will happily stand corrected.....

I would have to say that, out of all the keepers only John Forrest qualifies for a Shakers HoF.
Played nearly 500 times (over 3 times more than Dean) and was Mr Consistency. All the other keepers apart from Gary Kelly were here briefly and the best of those, Nev Southall and Dean Keilly, became better keepers after they left.
I would say it shold be John v Deano.....

I can't believe I forgot John Forrest. I shall go and fall upon my sword.
And mentioned Felgate. A sword's too good for you.....
Deano was great but Forrest must have made many brilliant saves during all those games he played for the club.
Mr Forrest for me!
Greg Farrell vs anybody you like.
He will always win, he has no equal.
We are not worthy
If we are using longjevity as a criteria, then Greg Farrell would't qualify as his stay was brief(less than 2 seasons?)With regrards to strikers ,Madden Carter ,Spence and Sir Georgie Jones come into consideration.
And mentioned Felgate. A sword's too good for you.....
Then I shall fall upon MANY swords. Many swords which are placed in a pit of snakes. Snakes and crocodiles. BIG crocodiles.
Now I must go. Valhalla awaits me.

I think Mr Bullock (Norman not Darren!!!!!) would warrant a chance at one of the strikers positions as well.
If we're talking strikers, it's got to be Craig Madden v A N Other.
Steve Johnson, Liam Robinson, Mark Carter & Phil Stant are other suggestions.
What about people like Tony Cunningham & Alan Taylor as well or Wayne Entwistle & Hulmey for entertainment value!

Strikers? Has to be Charlie Madden vs the big man (see pic left)
MF's? Terry McDermott vs Colin Bell
Def's? Paul Hilton vs Chris Lucketti
GK's? No question Fozzy gets it!
Shakers legends for the HOF - Andy Hill, Liam R, David Lee, TC, Porno Paskin, Sgt Stant, Paul Hilton, Charlie Madden, Derek Spence, Paul Butler, Chris L, Terry McD, Jungle, Pughie, David Johnson, Chris Swailes, Daws,
Lenny...I'll get me coat.....

I thought we were talkin about goalkeepers but we seemd to have moved on.
Keith Kennedy has to be in there.

The August vote will be for the goalkeepers position but this is more of a general discussion on all things Shakers which is never a bad thing.
Incidentally another suggestion was made for a Bury squad to be placed in the hall of fame. Something along the lines of the 1903 FA Cup Winning squad or the team that recently, although I have to admit it seems an awful long time ago, won promotion to Division 1.
I assume this is based on what players did when playing for us - not how good they went on to be after they left. That would rule out the likes of Southall, Dixon and David Johnson I would say. Possibly also Bell and McDermott but I'm not qualified to comment on how well they performed as Bury players.
Kiely was with us long enough and achieved enough to warrant serious consideration. I would put him up against Forrest for the keeper's jersey but Forrest would edge him out for me.
Keith Kennedy has no equal at left back. Well, perhaps Susan Kenworthy runs him close!
Maurice?!! Chris Swailes as a Hall of Fame contender?!!! Ive never seen somebody cost us so many goals!
As far as the strikers go, there is room for two strikers, Madden will surely be one but youve got to put Stant v Carter for the other space??!! Spike for me!
Stant?Ahead of Sir George Jones? You are obviously too young to have seen GJ play.

I just agree with everything Steve_Pilko said, though it's hard to compare Forrest with Kiely because 'keeping has changed so much. What about midfielders? I accept I'll probably the only person to want to vote for Joe Jakub, but who else?
How good was Wally Amos? Shouldn't Brian Turner get a mention? Dave Robbie? I don't think they should miss out just because not many of us have seen them.

The way we have decided to run with it is that we will produce an article at the beginning of each month which highlights who we feel are potential inductees in that particular position.
I hope that discussions, like the messages above, will ensure that we do not make any glaring omissions. The difficulty for me is that I only really started serious Shaker watching in the early 80's(although I had been attending since '66) and I would hate to think that outstanding players from earlier times are omitted due to that.
Once the article is posted on the main site then we will leave it for a couple of weeks to allow you all time to vote for who you want to be nominted as the two finalists on the messageboard. A poll will then be run on the website for you to elect which of the two players makes it into the Hall of Fame.
When we get to duplicated positions such as the two strikers we want four nominees for the two positions. The names will then be put in a hat and the draw for the final made.
I can't wait to see the final line up.
Greg who?

I'd vote for him too. It gave good balance having a left footed central midfielder. Good servant, scored goals, and a good captain..

The forward line (five of them) of the '61 promotion team who all scored more than twenty goals that season

Y3K Jon - I always liked Chris Swailes - I thought he always gave 110% for the team. Yes he cost us goals but everyones fave John Forrest also gave away one or two in his time!
As for Spike v Sgt Stant I'd always go for Spike as he was the best £6,000 this club ever spent when we got him from Barnet but Sarge always gave his all for the team and I've never seen a player who became such a cult hero to so many fans at so many clubs because of his attitude to them and his team mates. Porno Paskin had much the same attributes.
PS - I apologise for leaving Keith Kennedy out of my HOF list - KK would easily get the left back slot. The man was a hero and Bury through and through.
Gandalf, are we having subs as well? I'm sure there will be a lot of players who would make the bench...I'm not sure they would want to be interviewed for making the subs chairs, but what the heck!!!!

centre forward. the best there ever was ,or will ,be at gigg lane bar none, was RAY POINTER if billy alan in his infinate wisdom ,had not sold out every bury fan,and signed the death of our great club for a quick buck, we would have been promoted with out doubt that year long ago , ray would have gone down in history {he already has anyway } as the best centre forward to grace gigg lane :rl:
The best 2 centre halves we had followed in rapid succession John McGrath and Bob Stokoe. Totally different in style but both were a pleasure to watch. As for goalkeepers - my all time favourite was Roy McLaren - I was devastated when he left for Plymouth. Full backs would have to include Roy Parnell. Wing halves, Gordon Atherton and Brian Turner. Wingers, Jonny Hubbard and Greg Farrell - Farrell was by far the most talented player Bury ever had. Forwards - the legendary John Willie Parker.

I can't believe nobody has nominated Jimmy McIlwraith (he shot, he missed, he must be ****ing ****ed!!!). For sheer entertainment value and getting the crowd going, Jimmy was the man.

Difficult to say that we would definitely have been promoted. 1 win in 7 games prior to him leaving wasn't promotion form.

ROLL ON! Pink with nice frilly edges possibly? I think this is a good thing to honour the best of the past. But let us not forget the true greats of the game who have not really received their true honours. The person I have in mind is John Charles. If John had been English he would have had a knoghthood years ago. We should all join with Llanelli AFC in their efforts to get JC a knighthood at the very least. I doubt if anyone alive has seen a better centre-forward.

I saw the gentle giant play at Gigg Lane for Leeds United - Sheer class
The man is sheer class, met him in Monaco and spent most of the weekend with him, sadly, John is very ill now and his wife fears the worst

Gordon,
Thanks for info on Sir John. I'm filled with a sense of forboding and the dread of impending loss.

Is there a hall of shame? In terms of goalies Felgate & Farnworth could fight for the no. 1 Jersey

I know having a go at Farnworth and Felgate is in vogue , but they were not that bad - was it not one of them had a blinder for Leigh RMI against Fulham. Kevin Keegan was beside himself with praise after the game,

Kevin Keegan seems to be besides himself a lot these days. He seems not to be a fan of Eyal Berkovitc and is letting it be know via the mighty press that he is getting grief from EB for not going to Portsmouth when all he wants to do is play for Man City - I wonder if he'd take a pay cut and play for us! I'm told that he likes it here near Manchester.
