Blades swoop for Latic Armstrong 7 Jul

Sheffield United have completed a second signing in 24 hours with the capture of Oldham Athletic full-back Chris Armstrong for £100,000.

The 20-year-old had been at Boundary Park for almost two years following a £200,000 move from Bury and established himself as one of a number of promising stars at the cash-strapped Latics.

After sealing the switch, Armstrong told the Blades' official website: "I have played on the left in a four and a five and even as a left-sided centre-back in a three, so I know what is expected.

"I'm already feeling a bit nervous, but very excited about joining such a big club that did so well last season.

"I saw United quite a bit on television and was impressed with both their football and the blend of youth and experience."

Shouldn't the finger be pointed at a huge downturn in the value of footballers these days? Nelson £70,000, Armstrong £100,000, I know which I think is better value for money!

I hate W*rnock as much as anyone else, but to me the signing of Armstrong is just good business by Sheff Utd.

I'm sure if we we're buying a player, we wouldn't care very much about the sell on clause to his previous club, we'd just want him as cheaply as possible.

I agree with Sir Vic- the real culprits are FIFA/UEFA/FA for the ridiculous transfer window and for letting wages & transfer fees spiral out of control over the last 5 years. It's now collapsed and all but the richest clubs are struggling because of it.

Much as I hate to say it, W*rnock has done very well for his club by getting 2 very good young players for a combined price of £140k. It's screwed us, but apart from us, no-one gives a toss.

Warnocks a d*ck. We were robbed. Armstrongs worth well more than 100,000 I thought it was a bargain when we bought him from you and since then hes improved much more. Hes a class player.
I would have thought Warnock would have shown a bit of compassion to us in our situation considerin he was our manager not long ago.

Armstrong will play in the Premier League. I said that after seeing his early performances for us . I'm not sure if Oldham have "improved " him much though..I nearly wet myself laughing/crying when one Oldham fan claimed to myself and other attendant beer drinking Shakers that "Wadsworth has improved him". This was about 2 weeks after he'd gone to Boundary Park. Absolute cobblers. His talent and potential was clearly evident when he was in our Youth Team.

Just hope he doesn't get his Premier League chance with the Demon Chiropodist of Olde Pickering Towne.
