View Full Version : The Billy Ayre Website Player of the Season
Gordon cant vote - why???
Can't see Chris Billy's name.
Woody, Chris Billy's name is at bottom of list - where it should be in my estimation.

if you think Chris Billy's name should be at the bottom of the list, you clearly haven't seen much football in the recent past Maria. Whatever the criticisms hurled at him, he's done more for the club this season than 90% of the players.

yeah, gotta agree there dr p. billy always works hard. some of his passes don't always come off perfectly :) but he's a star in my book. but... player of the season? no contest. nelson has it. we all know that!
Chris's name wasn't there before. Gordon must have added it on since my message.
I haven't voted yet and it won't be for Nelson.
Note:
To vote, you need to be logged in for the vote box to appear.
maria, how can you criticise a player if you don't get to see games?
Djash, I go off what I read on here and in papers.
I am entitled to criticise whether I go to a game or not.
Maria, can't agree. I think you need to have an opinion on the player of the season built up over a season of seeing some games. I understand you have difficulty getting to games, but I don't think you can slag off a player, who has been solid all season, on the basis of newspapers (not sure which ones) and a couple of message boarders who wouldn't be happy if we cloned Zico, Pele, Maradona and Beckenbauer and sent them out in our shirts every weekend.
Sorry Djash. My criticism is not aimed JUST at Billy, but also the
OTHER SO-CALLED GOOD PLAYERS - of which there are 4/5.
If these players are SO GOOD WHY then are BURY in the position they are in in the league??????????
I criticise going off the commentary which I listen to, the match reports and as I said previously the comments on here and other board.
These players DO NOT deserve voting for this season as far as I am concerned. That is just my opinion and I am very disappointed that we are not going up as champions which is what we would be doing if these same players had any passion, commitment in their games.
That is the end of me moan and no more comments coming from me ok?
Maria
Don't take offence :) , just different opinions as usual!
For what it's worth, I've actually voted for Billy. He's one of the few who looks like he wants to win every week and he has been one of our better and more creative players. He has a knack of being in the right place at the right time quite often, more often in defence, but sometimes in attack as well.
Never thought I'd be saying that when he first joined, as it took him a long time to settle in.
My other considerations were Newby, Nelson and O'Shaughnessy (I know he hasn't played many games, but he gives everything and should be an example to some of the rest of them).

I too voted for Chris Billy.
He is one player who never stops running, never stops tackling and looks like he actually wants to win a game.
He always gives 100% whether he's having a good game or not.
I wish more players would follow his example!

Take Chris Billy out of the Bury team and you have no drive. If there is someone down injured and the players are waiting in their posistions, Billy is always the one going for motivation. Billy is a crackin player because he is a complete midfielder, his box to box running, his challanges for heading, use of his body weight, his basic movement are what make him a star. If I had to play in midfield with one of our midfielders I must say, I would feel safest with Chris.
I voted for Nelson, he has been constant and he does give it his all. Still there are rooms for improvement. He just nicked it from Billy in my view because for his age and the pressure he is put under, he is as cool as a cucumber.
I voted for Nelse but Chris Billy should have some sort of award for playing by himself in a position that is 'supposedly' occupied by a couple of other players too.
Hes the 1st player i'd pick every week.

Maybe Nelson may give him Captains player. :P
If Nelson is actually giving the award or will it be Newby or Forrest?
I can't believe only one person's voted for Terry Dunfield!!! :x

well, i was one of the first to be over the moon about terry joining us, and i still have his avatar today... but... he hasn't played much since we signed him so, personally, i think it would be unfair to vote for him as player of the season when there are other players (ie, nelson, my choice) who have been here week in week out.
 But no one provides as much entertainment during training as Terry does with his constant antics - except for Robbie.
For example - his warming-up routine at Southend at half-time, or lack of it.

I think it's very difficult to argue a case against Michael Nelson getting it. He has done consistently well this season, and is easily one of the best players in this division.
However, I've voted for Danny Swailes (my second choice) on the basis that he too has had a very good season and deserves recognition for that. It looks at this stage as though Nelse will walk away with the award.

I was torn who to vote for, Nelson or Connell!?!?!
I did choose Connell in the end as I feel he has made a massive impact to the team since has been given the chance and has proved himself as a fantastic footballer. He can also take coaching and direction from the other players, not many people can do that. A worthwhile a vote!

Couldn't possibly be anyone other than Michael Nelson.
Fringe player to captain in less than a season. 100% committed and never frightened to show the way to players who are senior and much better paid than him.
An absolute bargain.

I cannot believe that anyone could possibly consider voting for anybody else but Nelson. He's player of the season by a country mile.
Still, it's all about opinions, as we keep saying on this board. 8)
It will not allow me to vote, what I am doing wrong or is there a problem

I just read a post about Connell since he broke into the squad made a massive impact - shouldn't that mean he is player of the month?
Season should be Mr Consisdant in my opinion and there are very few that have performed to a good standard week in week out.
Nelson for me, although Billy and Gardner are not far behind.
puzzled as to why Newbyfanclub has not voted for newby :?:
Simple! Because two players were better than him throughout the season.
if your talking throughout the season then the number 10 springs to mind

Voted for CB because of the way he gees up the others and the huge effort he puts in. But Nelse has been superb and we won't forget the header at Dale in a hurry. Great stuff fellas.

If there was an award for player of the month I would have voted Connell for that, but as the award is for player of the season my vote still stands with Connell and Saturday confirmed that for me.

fair enough Charlene, credit where credit is given :)
I always said he should of started, I remember one time it might of been his debut when he was out on the right and he vollyed it and it hit the cross bar - any one else remember? Must of been at least 40 yards out.
Nicky Hill must be the next :D
UniWhite
29-04-2003, 22:08
I remember! Great hit, think the bar carried on shaking for a good couple of minutes! Just think if he'd have been in from the beginning of the season, he gives us the attacking threat that Unsworth doesn't have, no disrespect to Lee he is a good player but not in that position.
Didn't Connell also score a cute chip on his debut, or was that just my poor view as i was stood waiting to leave near the Manny Road End, probably just a bad deflection that found its way over the on coming keeper?
UniWhite 8)
Its all about opinions but i dont know how anybody could vote for someone other than Michael Nelson or Chris Billy this season. If you take this vote seriously there isnt much debate about the choice!
As for voting for Lee Connell? Must have a short memory, we play 46 league games in a season and he hasnt featured much. Charlene, are you telling me that Lee Connells excellent performances over a FEW games are worth more than Nelsons phenomenol contribution for the WHOLE of the season???????
ShakerMatt

Cheers UniWhite, I'm just glad I didn't dream it.
I'm not sure about his cheeky chip, don't remember him scoring on his debut

30-04-2003, 16:12
ShakerMatt, think we were well down at the time, didn't have much effect on the result, probably not one well rememebered by the Bury faithful!
Then again were many of our performances towards the end of last season memorable? Didn't think so! Just glad we are still around to play some part in the league!

It is my opinion and I stand by it I'm not taking anything away from Nelson he is top class and I fear that he will head hunted if we do not get promotion. My vote stands though as I said before this is the only award we can vote for so I voted my preferred choice.
We all have our own minds and opinions and as we are all Bury Supporters we stood support each other in our opinions not disagree.
I just feel that we have different methods on how to choose the BEST player throughout the season.
If Connell had played as many games as Nelse this year and played like he has been playing, he'd probably get my vote too.
If he still qualifies for young player of the year i'm sure he'll get that (ahead of David Nugent).
Charlene
01-05-2003, 13:32
Yeah I can see that. But if everyone had the same opinion it would be a boring place we live in!
I see Nelson is storming ahead though. How many times did you vote for him. ONLY JOKING!!!
Looking forward to Saturday, should a great match!
ShakerMatt

Nelson is storming ahead cos he deserves to be. If he actually had some competition to be with him than fair enough but no one has been consistant for the season.

Nelson kicks ass when it comes to getting stuck in, hence why I voted for him, nice to see he's leading the way. Unlike half our team, he's not afraid to get stuck in, and he doesn't just let the opposition play the ball. If you had him marking you, would you even bother trying to get past him?
Well in Nelse!!

Michael Nelson has gotta be the player of the season! What a tower of strength at the back!! Well done Nelse!!! :D
