First half

Garner - Good game, commanded his area well, never really troubled.

Barrass - Reasonable game, looked a bit off the pace at times (to be expected with so little match practice).

Unsworth - Played OK, looked a bit nervy in the middle of defence.

Swailes - Again, average game but we need a commanding centre back to marshall the defence.

Woodthorpe - Looked solid, had one chance on the overlap, should have done better.

Cooke - Looked comfortable on the ball but didn't do enough for my liking for a player of his class.

Connell - Excellent game, looked calm and composed, well taken goal.

Duxbury - Based on today's performance, he could be our best signing for years. Ran the show from the middle of the park, never hurried, every pass was simple but effective. Definite captain material.

Clegg - Disappointing showing for me. Too many mis-placed passes. Didn't play badly, but like Cooke, could do better with his level of talent.

Seddon - Classy showing, looked confident and wasn't afraid to have a shot on goal. Looks fit and hungry. Good to see!!

Porter - Played well, but still has rough edges. Promising showing.

Second half

Kennedy - Promising game, looked calm and didn't do much wrong. Could break into the first team this year.

Jones - Didn't look overly assured to me. Nearly caught out by Banim late in the game.

Gunby - Quietly effective in midfield. Could make some first team appearances this season.

Nugent - Full of running, well taken goal. At the heart of most of our second half attacks.

Preece - Reasonable game, but lacked pace and fitness. Maybe time to spend more games on the bench or in the stands.

Whaley - Looked lively, pace worried the Boro defence. Good headed finish to a flowing Bury move.

Forrest - Poor game. What has happened to Fozzie?

Leeson - Not much chance to show his talents.

All in all, a good, composed Bury showing. Duxbury will be the centre of our team this year. Most promising game? Gaz Seddon, without a doubt.

Craig,
Good summation of the players involved in the excellent 4 - 0 win at Stainton Park. I'm got to echo your worrying question about Fozzie - he doesn't seem to be the same player he was before being given the captaincy a while ago. A little disagreement about Swaz - he has the potential to be majestic and in the odd moments here and there tended to show this. I think he learned a lot playing alongside Nelse; Oh dear, what a loss!

Peter, I think Danny Swailes is a good player, don't get me wrong. I just think that there is a gaping hole left by the departure of Michael Nelson and as good as Danny is, he needs a player like Nelson alongside him.

I was glad to see Graham Barrow echoing my sentiments on the web site when he said that our next area to look at is a central defender. At least the management can see the areas in which we are deficient (although it doesn't take a genius to know that losing Nelson is a major blow.)

I think if Andy and Graham can get a quality centre back on board for the start of the season, we have a good chance this year.

Craig,
Oh! I do agree. We really do need another of a similar calibre to the mighty Nelse.
