Next in Arsenal's 92... No 16. Bury

Throughout the summer, we'll be running 'Arsenal's 92'. This special feature examines the links between Arsenal and every other League club...

16. Bury

Arsenal were the first team to defeat Bury. The Shakers won Division Two in their first season in League football - 1894. They played the Gunners in their fourth game and went down 4-2.

The two teams played each other regularly until Bury's relegation from the top- flight in 1929. The final game, a 7-1 victory to Arsenal, remains the club's biggest victory against Bury. There were two FA Cup meetings in the 1950s both won by the London side.

Lee Dixon (619 Arsenal games, 27 goals, 1988-2002) spent a season at the club after being released by Chester City. Eighteen months after leaving Gigg Lane he signed for Arsenal.

Other Arsenal players to feature for both clubs include: Pat Howard (20, 0, 1976) and Trevor Ross (67, 9, 1974-77).

I have actually seen Bury play Aresenal (cup -58?) David Herd scored a lucky goal at Cemmy end). A name missing from the list is Tilley who we sold to Arsenal. Play cricket against his lad occasionally, good cricketer and was (repeat was) a very useful semi pro player - Stalybridge etc

We've got a better record against the Gunners than I would have expected.

Woody - I'm always impressed by the number of websites, new items etc you post about. You must have plenty of spare time on your hands!

The only time I saw The Arsenal play in the flesh was at Stebonheath, Llanelli in the fifties when the beat Llanelli AFC in the FACup. They were not at all impressive then, as I recall.

Surrey exile,

Yesterday I found a link on the newsnow website for Bury to the article on Arsenal's site.
It took just a minute to copy and paste it.

(I hope you don't think I type everything out)
